Good Morning, Followers!
When your family gets ready to welcome company to your home, do you take extra time to clean and prepare food? Before parents or special guests visit your classroom, does your teacher ask you to clean your desk, straighten shelves, and make sure everything is in order? Well that is what is happening on the TS Kennedy this week!
On Saturday, while docked in Tampa, the TK Kennedy will be doing some entertaining. We will welcome alumni, parents, Massachusetts Maritime Academy staff, and representatives from the maritime industry. The event is held outside on the Helo deck. Chartwells goes above and beyond their usual delicious food. 1/C cadets with leadership positions are invited to attend the event. Guests enjoy talking with cadets about Sea Term and the plans after graduation. Often the 1/C cadets leave the reception having made valuable connections that will prove helpful in the months and years ahead.
The cadets and crew have been working diligently to get the Helo deck in the very best shape possible. It is have everything in perfect on an old, working ship, but we have certainly made the effort to do so. You can be sure that there has been plenty of needle-gunning and painting going on. We are fortunate that the weather has cooperated. I have been impressed with the pride that the cadets show as they work.
The focus piece of the evening will be the design that is being painted in the center of the Helo deck. The talented artist is Mara Footit. You may have already admired Mara’s talent without realizing it. She designed the colorful embroidered insignia on the back of the coveralls worn by the 1/C Marine Transportation Rates. Everyone on the TS Kennedy has been stopping by to track the progress of her work. This is not the first time that Cadet Footit has brought her talent to the Helo Deck. In 2015, she painted the Patriots logo after they won the Super Bowl. In 2016, she recreated the logo used to mark Massachusetts Maritime Academy’s 125th birthday. Cadet Footit is coordinating a team of cadets who are assisting with the painting of the design.
